Have You Volunteered? — Dmitry Moor, 1920

Dmitry Moor · Soviet Civil War recruitment poster, 1920

What it is

Moor’s Civil War recruitment poster — a Red Army soldier pointing directly at the viewer, the question printed beneath him in bold red type.

Why it matters

One of the most direct pieces of Soviet graphic design of the Civil War period, and — unlike some of this wing’s other candidates — cleanly hosted on Commons with no outstanding Russian-copyright caveat (Moor died in 1946).

What to notice

The pointing hand is the entire composition’s vanishing point — every line in the poster leads to it.

A question aimed at whoever is standing in front of it.
