In March read the books you've always meant to read

Work Projects Administration Poster Collection, 1938

What it is

A WPA statewide Library Project poster in which a windblown figure carries the classics you have been putting off, named on the sheet as Scott, Dumas, Thackeray, Dickens and Austen.

Why it matters

It was printed as a colour silkscreen on board. The Library of Congress dates it only as 'between 1936 and 1941', with a verso stamp of Mar 25 1941, so treat the year as a range.

What to notice

A windblown woman braces against March, trailing Scott, Dumas, Dickens and Austen.

Made by artists on the public payroll — art the country already owned.
