W.P.A. Federal Theatre Project's Living Newspaper, sponsored by Newspaper Guild of N.Y., presents "Injunction granted"

Harry Herzog · WPA Federal Theatre Project, Living Newspaper unit, sponsored by the Newspaper Guild of N.Y., 1936

What it is

A color silkscreen theater poster designed by Harry Herzog in 1936 for the WPA Federal Theatre Project's Living Newspaper unit, advertising the production "Injunction Granted."

Why it matters

The Living Newspaper staged documentary theater pulled straight from the day's headlines, and "Injunction Granted" turned that method on labor and the courts, sponsored by the Newspaper Guild of New York. It belongs to the mid-1930s Federal Theatre Project, a New Deal experiment that put out-of-work theater people to work making topical drama for a broad public. The single image of a policeman brandishing a court order carries the show's argument before a word of copy is read.

What to notice

The officer and his upheld court order are printed in flat silkscreen color with no shading to soften the confrontation.

The law, raised overhead like a weapon.
