Announcing federal adult classes
Work Projects Administration Poster Collection, 1937
What it is
This 1937 silkscreen - verso stamp November 19, 1937 - announces federally sponsored and conducted free adult education classes at the Federal Adult Schools, 1275 Ontario Street.
Why it matters
It is the most literal poster of the group: an announcement with an address, produced as a colour screenprint on board. The Library of Congress files it among the WPA adult education posters associated with Columbus, Ohio.
What to notice
Federally sponsored classes, a street address on Ontario Street, and no ornament wasted on either.
Made by artists on the public payroll — art the country already owned.
