Five Schools, Built to Deepen · Plakat — the Object Poster
Hier zeichnet man die Kriegsanleihe
Lucian Bernhard · German war loan (Kriegsanleihe) subscription poster, 1917
What it is
The lettering does the whole job - subscribe to the war loan here, closing 18 October, 1pm - in the reductive Sachplakat manner Lucian Bernhard had made the house style of German advertising.
Why it matters
It is a colour lithograph, catalogued by the Library of Congress at roughly 40 by 57 cm.
What to notice
Bernhard strips the war bond appeal to its bones: flat colour, one command, a deadline you cannot miss.
One object, one word, and nothing wasted.
