Lack of funds need not discourage from seeking competent medical care
Work Projects Administration, 1939
What it is
The Library of Congress dates this sheet only to a range - between 1936 and 1939, with a July 18, 1939 stamp on the verso - so the exact year is unrecorded.
Why it matters
It is a silkscreen in colour on board, printed under the WPA's Federal Art Project poster programme, and it exists because in the late 1930s the assumption that a doctor was for people with money was doing real damage. The copy is plain to the point of bluntness, which is what makes it land.
What to notice
A Depression-era poster that says the quiet part out loud: being broke is not a reason to stay sick.
Made by artists on the public payroll — art the country already owned.
