Maîtres de l'Affiche, Vol. 1, Plate 46 — Steinlen

Théophile Alexandre Steinlen · Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, vol. 1 (Imprimerie Chaix, Paris), 1895

What it is

Plate 46 of the first volume of Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, the monthly lithographic series Jules Chéret ran through the Imprimerie Chaix in Paris to put reduced versions of the great street posters into subscribers' portfolios.

Why it matters

Steinlen worked in flat, poster-scaled colour and heavy contour, the drawing built to read at pavement distance and losing none of that punch at plate size.

What to notice

Steinlen's cabaret poster, shrunk to a collector's plate and printed on Chaix's presses.

For one decade, the street was the gallery.
