Maîtres de l'Affiche, Vol. 2, Plate 52 — Will Bradley

Will Bradley · Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, vol. 2 (Imprimerie Chaix, Paris), 1895

What it is

A colour lithograph by the American designer Will Bradley, issued in 1895 as plate 52 of volume 2 of Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and printed by the Imprimerie Chaix in Paris.

Why it matters

Les Maîtres de l'Affiche was Paris's monthly anthology of the best poster art of the moment, and Bradley was one of the few Americans the series let in among the French and Belgian masters. His work carried the new Art Nouveau vocabulary across the Atlantic and back, proving the style was not a Parisian monopoly.

What to notice

Look at how much is done with almost nothing: unbroken black silhouettes and a whiplash contour holding the whole design together on very few inks.

An outsider's line, printed with the house it came to rival.
