Maîtres de l'Affiche, Vol. 2, Plate 82 — Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec · Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, vol. 2 (Imprimerie Chaix, Paris), 1895
What it is
A colour lithograph by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, issued in 1895 as Plate 82 of Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, volume 2, printed by the Imprimerie Chaix in Paris. It reproduces his advertising poster for the literary magazine La Revue Blanche.
Why it matters
La Revue Blanche was the sharp, avant-garde review of 1890s Paris, and Lautrec gave it an image built the way he built everything — a cropped, off-balance figure pulled from the fashionable street rather than the studio. The Chaix Maîtres de l'Affiche series then lifted these street posters into a monthly collector's plate, which is why a piece of paid advertising survives as a signed print.
What to notice
Look at the flat colour fields up close: the granular, smoke-like grain is crachis — ink flicked from a loaded brush through a screen, not a smooth wash.
Advertising made with a printer's whole hand, and it outlasted the thing it sold.
