Opel

Hans Rudi Erdt · Opel, 1911

What it is

Erdt's 1911 advertising lithograph for the German carmaker Opel is a textbook Sachplakat — object poster — the Berlin school that stripped advertising down to the product, the brand name, and a flat colour field.

Why it matters

The sheet measures about 69 by 93 centimetres. Erdt worked in the same Berlin orbit as Lucian Bernhard, and this is the reduction those designers were arguing for, done without a wasted mark.

What to notice

The Sachplakat in one move: the car, the word Opel, and nothing else.

One object, one word, and nothing wasted.
