Pl 10 - De Feure

Georges de Feure · Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, vol. 1 (Imprimerie Chaix, Paris), 1895

What it is

A colour lithograph by Georges de Feure, issued in 1895 as Plate 10 of the first volume of Les Maitres de l'Affiche, the small-format poster series printed by Imprimerie Chaix in Paris.

Why it matters

Les Maitres de l'Affiche was Chaix's subscription series, reprinting the great advertising posters of the day at a size a collector could keep. De Feure worked the Symbolist wing of the Paris poster movement, and this plate carried that decorative, drawn sensibility from the street to the portfolio.

What to notice

Look at the edges of the drawing: the lithographic transfer holds the artist's own line rather than dissolving it into a screen of halftone dots.

A wall's argument, folded down to something you could own.
