Pl 175 - Paul Berthon

Paul Berthon · Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, vol. 4, 1895

What it is

Plate 175 from volume 4 of Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, sourced from Gallica.

Why it matters

The file page gives the date as 1895, though its categories also reference 1898 - the exact year is not settled on the page, and the 1899 in the candidate list is not supported. Berthon worked in the softer, more botanical register of Art Nouveau, closer to pastel than to poster ink, with lettering absorbed into the plant forms.

What to notice

Berthon's stringed-instrument reverie in tendril-tangled Art Nouveau, printed landscape-wide.

For one decade, the street was the gallery.
