Pl 20 - Edward Penfield
Edward Penfield · Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, vol. 1 (Imprimerie Chaix, Paris), 1895
What it is
A stone-lithograph plate designed by Edward Penfield, issued in 1895 as plate 20 of the first volume of Les Maitres de l'Affiche, Imprimerie Chaix's monthly portfolio of poster reductions.
Why it matters
Penfield was the leading figure of the American poster boom of the 1890s, and Chaix's Paris series was the period's authoritative roll call of the form. His appearance at plate 20 marks the moment the series began treating US work as peer material rather than provincial imitation.
What to notice
Because it is a true stone lithograph and not a photomechanical copy, the flat unbroken fields of colour hold clean and even edges right up to full scale.
The American arrival, printed on Paris stone.
