Pl 227 - Paul Berthon

Paul Berthon · Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, vol. 5, 1900

What it is

Plate 227 from the fifth volume of Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, dated 1900 on the file page and digitised by the New York Public Library.

Why it matters

Berthon's lithography leans on flat mineral colours and a drawn, almost pastel surface rather than the hard commercial contour of his Chaix contemporaries. The Commons record gives no title beyond the plate number, so the sheet is catalogued as issued.

What to notice

Berthon again, plate 227, the chalk-soft end of Art Nouveau at full poster height.

For one decade, the street was the gallery.
