Pl 232 - William Nicolson

William Nicolson (William Nicholson) · Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, vol. 5, 1900

What it is

Plate 232 of volume 5, dated 1900, categorised on Commons as a 1900s United Kingdom maize flour advertisement.

Why it matters

Nicholson's poster manner is the opposite of the French line: massed dark shapes, almost no interior modelling, the figure carried entirely by silhouette. Note that Commons spells the name Nicolson on this file; the artist is normally William Nicholson.

What to notice

Nicholson's blunt British silhouette work - a maize flour advert with the drawing cut to the bone.

For one decade, the street was the gallery.
