What it is

Plate 27 of volume one of Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, dated 1895 on the source page — the year Mucha's theatrical poster work made him famous almost overnight in Paris.

Why it matters

The Chaix portfolio reprinted his design as a small stone lithograph, keeping the pale flesh tones, the ornamental halo forms and the long vertical format that became his signature. Digitised by the Bibliothèque nationale de France from its bound copy of the series.

What to notice

Mucha at the exact moment the Paris poster trade decided he mattered.

For one decade, the street was the gallery.
