Alfons Mucha · Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, vol. 2, 1895

What it is

A colour lithograph by Alphonse Mucha, issued in 1895 as Plate 94 of Les Maitres de l'Affiche, volume 2. It reproduces Mucha's poster for the Salon des Cent, printed by the Imprimerie Chaix in Paris.

Why it matters

Les Maitres de l'Affiche was a monthly Parisian subscription series that took the great street posters of the 1890s and reissued them small, for collectors who wanted the Belle Epoque wall on their reading desk. Mucha was one of its stars, and this plate carries his Salon des Cent design into that pocket format. The 1895 date is the album's, not necessarily the original placard's.

What to notice

Look at how crisply the drawn line holds even at reading-desk scale, a tell of Chaix's colour lithography, preserved in the BnF scan.

A street shout, folded down to fit a collector's drawer.
