Plakat für die Möbelfirma „Jacob & Josef Kohn" (Russisches Plakat)

Koloman Moser · Jacob & Josef Kohn, Vienna, 1904

What it is

A colour lithographic poster designed by Koloman Moser around 1904, printed by Albert Berger in Vienna at 95 x 63 cm. Its subject is a single standing barefoot woman, made to advertise the bentwood furniture firm Jacob & Josef Kohn.

Why it matters

Moser was a founding figure of the Vienna Secession, and this is that movement doing commercial work: an art poster and a sales tool at once. Kohn wanted the Russian market, so a Secession designer's flat, decorative language got pointed at moving chairs east. It marks the moment when Vienna's avant-garde and its export furniture trade shared the same wall.

What to notice

Look at how the figure is built entirely from flat colour and hard contour, with almost no shading to round her out.

Fine art, put to work selling chairs.
