Five Schools, Built to Deepen · Vienna Secession
Plakat zur XII. Ausstellung der Vereinigung Bildender Künstler Österreichs. Secession. November–Dezember '01
Alfred Roller · Vereinigung Bildender Künstler Österreichs — Secession, 1901
What it is
An original colour lithograph by Alfred Roller, made in 1901 to announce the twelfth exhibition of the Vienna Secession. It is an exhibition poster, printed on poster paper by A. Berger in Vienna.
Why it matters
Roller drew it for the Secession — the breakaway union of Viennese artists — to summon a public to their twelfth show, running November to December 1901. He would go on to remake stagecraft as Gustav Mahler's designer at the Court Opera, and the same eye for a bold, engineered image is already here. This is Vienna at the height of its secessionist decade, arguing for the new by putting it on the street.
What to notice
Look at the format itself: an extreme vertical of 95 x 31.5 cm, a narrow column of a poster cut to fit the slim Ringstrasse hoardings it was pasted onto.
A tall thin shout in a lithographer's ink, sized to the width of a lamppost.
