Plakatentwurf für die „Erste grosse Kunstausstellung" der Secession

Koloman Moser · Vereinigung bildender Künstler Österreichs (Wiener Secession), 1897

What it is

A hand-painted poster design by Koloman Moser, 1897: watercolour, gouache, coloured pencil and metallic pigment on tracing canvas, made for the Vienna Secession's first large art exhibition. This is the artwork behind the poster, not a printed sheet.

Why it matters

1897 was the year Vienna's younger artists walked out on the academy and founded the Secession, and their first exhibition was the announcement. Moser, one of the movement's core designers, built the image that would carry that argument onto the street. The design is the moment the break went public.

What to notice

Look at the metallic passages — worked in real metal pigment, they read as leaf rather than a flat printed yellow.

The instant a rebellion had to fit on a wall.
