Poster, Godstone, London Underground

Edward McKnight Kauffer · London Underground, 1915

What it is

An offset lithograph travel poster of 1915, designed by Edward McKnight Kauffer and printed by Johnson, Riddle & Co. of south-east London for the London Underground. It looks out over a quarry at Godstone, Surrey, with a hill behind and wagons and workers at the cut face.

Why it matters

This is Kauffer at the very start of his long run for the Underground, part of the same 1915 group as The North Downs and Oxhey Woods, made to send Londoners out along the line into the Surrey countryside. What makes it odd is the subject: not a meadow or a village green but a working quarry, an industrial scene offered up as a reason to travel.

What to notice

See how the quarry, the hill, and the men are all built from flat, unmodelled planes of colour rather than shaded depth.

Even the working cut of a hillside could be a destination.
