Richard Strauss-Woche, festival poster

Ludwig Hohlwein · Richard Strauss-Woche, Munich, 23–28 June 1910, 1910

What it is

Made for the Richard Strauss week in Munich, 23–28 June 1910, and held by the Library of Congress as cph.3g12543.

Why it matters

Hohlwein gives the sheet a single standing figure with a tall staff — often read as Salome, whose opera had made Strauss notorious five years earlier — massed in flat silhouette against bare ground. This is the Hohlwein method at its most reduced: shape and edge doing the work that shading would do elsewhere.

What to notice

Hohlwein's Strauss festival poster: one robed figure, one tall staff, and almost nothing else.

One object, one word, and nothing wasted.
