See America, Welcome to Montana

M. Weitzman · U.S. Travel Bureau, 1937

What it is

M.

Why it matters

Weitzman made this for the Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project; the Library of Congress dates it to a range, between 1936 and 1938, hence the circa 1937 in the filename. The composition is a mountain scene with a horse and rider, the peaks blocked in as silhouettes so the eye reads distance from color alone. It was issued through the U.S. Travel Bureau.

What to notice

A lone rider against Montana mountains, the whole range carried on three or four flat colors.

Made by artists on the public payroll — art the country already owned.
