Tänzerin Miss Olga George

Koloman Moser · Almanach der Wiener Werkstätte, 1911

What it is

A colour print after a Koloman Moser drawing, dated 1911, reproduced in the Almanach der Wiener Werkstätte. Its subject is a figure study of the dancer named on the sheet as Miss Olga George.

Why it matters

Moser was a founder of both the Vienna Secession and the Wiener Werkstätte, the workshop that carried the Secession's design language off the gallery wall and into printed pages, textiles, and objects. This is not a poster selling anything; it is a dancer set down in the house style of that circle, published in the almanac the Werkstätte issued to show its own work.

What to notice

At full size the halftone dot pattern of the almanac page sits visibly across the image, the printing tell of a figure lifted from a book rather than pulled from a lithographic stone.

A dancer held still on the page, in the hand of the men who built modern Vienna's look.
