Visit historic Ephrata, Pennsylvania

Katherine Milhous · Work Projects Administration Poster Collection, 1938

What it is

Katherine Milhous shows a pair of angels dropping flowers above the Ephrata Cloister, the eighteenth-century pietist community in Lancaster County.

Why it matters

The Library of Congress dates the poster only to a range, between 1936 and 1941, and records that the sheet was signed in pencil by the artist. The symmetrical angels and the flower-strewn field lean directly on Pennsylvania-German fraktur convention, the decorated-manuscript tradition Milhous spent her career translating into print.

What to notice

Two angels scatter flowers over the Ephrata Cloister — Milhous at her most fraktur.

Made by artists on the public payroll — art the country already owned.
