Visit the Zoo (Two Penguins)
Works Progress Administration, 1936
What it is
A WPA colour woodcut poster from 1936, carrying a date stamp of 4 August 1937 on its verso.
Why it matters
The design reduces two penguins to blocky fields of flat colour, the kind of shape-first drawing the relief-block process rewards. It belongs to the Works Progress Administration's campaign to push free and cheap public recreation during the Depression.
What to notice
Two penguins, cut in wood and printed flat, invite the whole Depression-era city to the zoo.
Made by artists on the public payroll — art the country already owned.
