Five Schools, Built to Deepen · Plakat — the Object Poster
Zoologischer Garten München
Ludwig Hohlwein · Munich Zoo (Zoologischer Garten München), 1912
What it is
Ludwig Hohlwein made this 1912 lithograph for the Munich zoo, which had opened only the year before as the Zoologischer Garten München and later became Tierpark Hellabrunn.
Why it matters
It was printed by G. Schuh & Cie. in Munich at roughly 125 by 91 centimetres. The design is pure Hohlwein: silhouetted masses of flat colour doing the work an outline would normally do, lettering set as a solid block rather than decoration. He was the German poster designer of his generation, and this is the commercial-lithography idiom at its most confident.
What to notice
Hohlwein's Munich zoo poster: flat lithographic slabs of colour, no outline, no fuss.
One object, one word, and nothing wasted.
