Absinthe Robette

Henri Privat-Livemont · Colour lithograph poster, Brussels, 1896, 1896

What it is

Privat-Livemont's 1896 poster is the Belgian answer to Mucha: a robed woman raising the glass, ringed by a decorative aureole and rendered in the artist's signature pale outline that makes the flesh glow against the ground.

Why it matters

The colour lithograph was printed by Goffart in Brussels. It became the most reproduced absinthe image of the era and remains the shorthand picture of the drink's belle-époque cult.

What to notice

A translucent-robed figure lifts a glass of green absinthe inside a halo of curling Art Nouveau line.

For one decade, the street was the gallery.
