Aperitivo digestivo Fernet-Branca

Leonetto Cappiello · Fernet-Branca, 1911

What it is

A 1911 colour lithograph advertising poster by Leonetto Cappiello for the Milanese amaro Fernet-Branca, printed by Vercasson in Paris.

Why it matters

By 1911 Cappiello had left Belle Epoque prettiness behind for the method that made his name: one arresting figure the eye cannot escape, built to sell across a crowded street. The poster came out of his long working partnership with the Paris printer Vercasson, and it put a bitter Italian digestivo in front of a French public as pure spectacle.

What to notice

Look for how the composition stakes everything on a single figure, isolated so there is nowhere else for the eye to go.

Bitterness, sold at a glance.
