Caudieux

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec · Colour lithograph poster, Paris, 1893, 1893

What it is

Toulouse-Lautrec drew the café-concert performer Caudieux in 1893 as a mass of forward motion — the body flung across the sheet, the footlights flattening him into silhouette.

Why it matters

The colour lithograph was pulled at Imprimerie Chaix, 20 rue Bergère, the Paris shop that printed much of the era's poster boom, and Lautrec's HTL monogram sits at lower right. Brush, crayon and spattered crachis give the surface its granular texture rather than flat commercial ink.

What to notice

Lautrec's café-concert comic Caudieux barrels across the stage, all bulk and momentum, signed with the artist's monogram.

For one decade, the street was the gallery.
