Divan Japonais, 75 rue des Martyrs

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec · Colour lithograph poster for the Divan Japonais cabaret, Ed. Fournier directeur, Paris, 1893; sheet 81 × 62.5 cm, 1893

What it is

Lautrec's 1893 poster for the Divan Japonais at 75 rue des Martyrs is a lesson in what to leave out: the seated figure in black dominates the sheet, the double-bass scroll cuts diagonally through the foreground, and the yellow-gloved singer on stage loses her head to the top edge.

Why it matters

The flat colour fields and severe cropping are borrowed straight from Japanese woodblock design. Printed by Edw. Ancourt in Paris using brush, crayon, crachis and transferred tone screens on a sheet 81 × 62.5 cm.

What to notice

A black-sheathed woman watches the cabaret stage while the singer above her is cropped clean off at the neck.

For one decade, the street was the gallery.
