Du soleil dans un verre... Cognac Monnet

Leonetto Cappiello · Cognac Monnet, 1927

What it is

A colour lithograph advertising poster for Cognac Monnet, designed by Leonetto Cappiello and printed by Devambez in Paris in 1927.

Why it matters

Cappiello, the Livorno-born poster designer who reshaped French advertising, built his images on a single shock motif floating against a flat dark ground -- and Cognac Monnet drew one of his purest versions of the trick: sunlight, literally, poured into a glass. It sold brandy to the Paris of the late 1920s the way all his best work did, by branding the eye with one unforgettable image rather than an argument. The sheet survives at the Bibliotheque nationale de France.

What to notice

Look at how the drink glows against the dark ground -- the molten-orange glass is the only lit thing, and Cappiello lets the surrounding blackness do the shouting.

Not a drink. A caught piece of daylight, held up to be swallowed.
