What it is

A tall, narrow advertising poster for 'Lays for Little Ones', issued by the London branch of the music publisher G.

Why it matters

Ricordi & C°. It is signed A. Hohenstein and dated 98 in the image itself, the same hand that drew Ricordi's great opera bills of the 1890s. The BnF holds the sheet in its Gallica poster collection and records it at 50 cm wide by 30 cm high. The narrow format is typical of shop-window and counter display advertising of the period.

What to notice

Hohenstein turns his opera-poster brush on a book of children's songs for Ricordi's London house, signed and dated '98.

The house that printed the aria and the advertisement in the same hand.
