Leopoldo Metlicovitz (1868-1944) · Advertising poster for Giovanni Gilardini, Naples, 1900
What it is
A 1900 lithographic advertising poster by Leopoldo Metlicovitz (1868-1944) for the Neapolitan house of Giovanni Gilardini, dealer in umbrellas, walking sticks and fans - ombrelli, bastoni, ventagli, ecc. ecc.
Why it matters
Metlicovitz was one of the marquee draughtsmen at the Officine G. Ricordi & C. in Milan, the same lithographic works that printed Italy's great opera bills, and here that theatrical apparatus is turned on a shop counter's worth of accessories. A Milanese firm selling a Naples merchant to Naples, it belongs to the moment when Italian commerce learned to advertise with the same production values as its stage.
What to notice
Look at the scan closely and the grain of the lithographic stone holds even at full poster size, the physical tooth of the printing surface still legible in the ink.
Opera-house craft, spent on the price of an umbrella.
