Jeanne d'Arc — Sarah Bernhardt

Eugène Grasset · Nouvelles Affiches Artistiques G. de Malherbe & H. A. Cellot, rue Notre-Dame des Champs, Paris, 1890; sheet 77 × 120 cm, 1890

What it is

Eugène Grasset's 1890 poster casts Sarah Bernhardt as Jeanne d'Arc in heavy contour and flat colour, a manner drawn straight from the medieval stained glass and manuscript illumination Grasset studied.

Why it matters

The BnF sheet is inscribed as the 'modèle accepté par Sarah Bernhardt' — the version the actress signed off on. Engraving credits go to Verdoux, Ducourtioux & Huillard, issued through the Nouvelles Affiches Artistiques of G. de Malherbe & H. A. Cellot on the rue Notre-Dame des Champs.

What to notice

Grasset armours Sarah Bernhardt as Joan of Arc — stained-glass outlines, banner and blade, in the model the actress herself approved.

For one decade, the street was the gallery.
