L'Escarmouche, journal illustré hebdomadaire

Henri-Gabriel Ibels · L'Escarmouche, directeur Georges Darien, 1893

What it is

L'Escarmouche ran only months in 1893–94 under Georges Darien, but its poster names the talent it had drawn in: Anquetin, Ibels himself, Toulouse-Lautrec, Vuillard and Willette.

Why it matters

Henri-Gabriel Ibels, the Nabi who called himself the 'nabi journaliste', drew the sheet, printed by Eugène Verneau on rue de la Folie-Méricourt in Paris.

What to notice

Ibels advertises a short-lived 1893 satirical weekly whose contributor list reads like a Nabis roll call.

For one decade, the street was the gallery.
